Reports: Warriors waive Chris Paul, who will become a free agent

The Golden State Warriors are waive point guard Chris Paul before the start of free agency, According to multiple reports.

The 12-time All-Star will enter free agency as an unrestricted free agent. Golden State made the move before Sunday’s deadline that would have guaranteed Paul’s contract for $30 million next season. The Warriors reportedly sought out suitors to trade Paul before Sunday’s deadline and released him after failing to secure a trade partner.

Paul played a single season in Golden State, splitting time as a defensive back and reserve teammate for Stephen CurryAt 39, his scoring ability has diminished significantly compared to his All-Star prime, but Paul remains a capable playmaker who can bring players into play who can score in spurts.

In 58 games, including 18 starts last season, Paul averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 turnovers and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from 3-point range. He could appeal to a contending team looking for depth and leadership at point guard.

The Warriors released Paul as they look to retool their roster around Curry in hopes of competing in the West next season.

Five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson’s future in Golden State is in doubt at the start of free agency. Talks with 13-year Warriors veteran have reportedly broken down as he hits the market as an unrestricted free agent. Los Angeles Lakers, Scissors, Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers are among the reported teams Thompson plans to meet with the free agent.
