It seems as if Shannon Sharpe should have been staying at a Holiday Inn Express.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer revealed during a recent appearance on the “Funky Friday” podcast hosted by Cam Newton why he no longer sleeps at women’s houses.
It was two separate occasions that ultimately led the Hall of Fame tight end to change his ways, and both, he explained, led to unwanted drama with women.
Sharpe first mentioned the night he was selected by the Broncos and that he would return to Georgia after the draft.
He was returning to town late and didn’t want to scare his grandmother by coming into the house late at night, prompting Sharpe to call a woman to see if she was single and if it would be okay for him to stay at her house.
“Cam, something told me, ‘Boy, keep your clothes on. ’ So I put on some shorts and a T-shirt,” Sharpe explained in the episode, according to Fox News. “Man, have you ever had sleep paralysis? You can hear things, but you can’t move… I can hear, and it’s getting louder and louder, louder and louder, and they’re arguing. So, at that point, boom! The door comes off the hinges… So I jumped up and I was like, ‘Hey, what’s going on, kid? What’s going to happen? ’ I was like, ‘Oh, God, he’s got some dead bodies on his resume. ’ Yeah, I’m talking about those kind of dead bodies.”
While the man did not appear to be angry with Sharpe (he said he had, in fact, been a fan), he was “tired of this ‘B’ lie,” referring to the woman.
“I said to myself, ‘Me too. ‘ Cam, man, I put my shoes on and ran out of there,” Sharpe continued.
Sharpe had been selected in the seventh round of the 1990 NFL Draft after playing all four years at Savannah State University.
Despite the difficult experience at the time, it was not enough to prevent Sharpe from making the same mistake a second time three years later.
Sharpe had returned to Savannah State for homecoming when the Broncos had a bye week during the 1993 NFL season and encountered a woman while there.
Once again, the situation was turned upside down.
“I put my stuff down on the floor and looked at the door handle, which was turning… A guy came in. He had that (AK-47). Oh, Lord, have mercy. I said, ‘Lord.’ And he looked at me and said, ‘My friend.’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He was about to ask me if I was Sharpe. I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘I thought so.’ I said, ‘My friend, are these your people?’ He said, ‘Yeah. Two years,’” Sharpe said.
“I said, ‘Dude, I don’t know.’ I said, ‘Now you know who I am.’ I said, ‘Man, it was my mistake. You saved me.’ Because if I hadn’t been interrupted, I wouldn’t be telling this story right now.”
That was the last time Sharpe attempted to stay in a woman’s home, he said.
“I haven’t closed my eyes in another woman’s house in 31 years,” Sharpe said.
Sharpe played 12 seasons with the Broncos and two with the Ravens during his NFL career.
Sharpe, who won three Super Bowl titles, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
