Souness praises confident Manchester United star

Speaking in his column for The Daily Mail, Graeme Souness highlighted the confidence of Kobbie Mainoo ahead of Euro 2024 this summer.

Kobbie Mainoo had a great season at Old Trafford and the Manchester United star established himself as a key figure in midfield for Erik ten Hag.

The Stockport-born 19-year-old’s magnificent campaign with United earned him his senior debut for England during the international break in March.

head of england Gareth Southgate was impressed with Mainoo’s emergence and included the United midfielder in his squad for Euro 2024 in Germany.

Souness praised Mainoo’s composure on the ball, despite claiming that Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has a better “understanding of the position”.

However, the former Sky Sports pundit added that the United and England midfielder is “full of confidence” ahead of the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 campaign.

“I’m very happy that Adam Wharton has come in. I really like the Crystal Palace midfielder,” Souness said.

“I have said before that he knows the responsibilities and discipline required of a midfielder and that he has real quality.

“Kobbie Mainoo is good on the ball, but Wharton understands the position better.

“In Wharton, Mainoo and Cole Palmer you have three young players who have taken their opportunity and are full of confidence, but Palmer will give his coach a big headache. “England’s true strength is in its firepower.”

Ten Hag deserves more credit for the development of Mainoo

Ten Hag has handled Kobbie Mainoo well in the United star’s breakthrough season, including the praise he has heaped on the player.

The United manager has not been carried away by exaggerating the England international’s potential and allowed Mainoo to speak on the pitch.

Mainoo repaid the trust Ten Hag had in him with his performances, and the England international put in solid and consistent performances last season.

The Three Lions international has opened up about his development under former Ajax boss Ten Hag and how he has “protected” him at times.

“Obviously, he is the first coach I played with and he always helped me, gave me advice, hugged me and also protected me,” Mainoo told the Manchester Evening News In May.

“You know it’s always difficult for a young player to join a United team.”
