American winger Tim Weah receives suspension for red card against Panama

Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. winger Tim Weah’s suspension has been extended to two games by South American soccer’s governing body for striking Panama’s Roderick Miller during their Copa American group stage match on Thursday.

Weah received a red card in the 18th minute of the United States’ 2-1 loss, resulting in an automatic one-game suspension. The South American Football Confederation said Weah was suspended for a second game and fined $3,000 by a judge on its disciplinary committee. The money will be deducted from the U.S. Soccer Federation’s payment to CONMEBOL for television, participation and/or prize money.

CONMEBOL said the discipline is not subject to appeal.

Weah will miss the U.S.’s final group match on Monday night against Uruguay in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Copa America quarterfinals if the Americans advance.

The 23-year-old is the son of George Weah, the 1995 FIFA Player of the Year, who ended a four-year term as president of Liberia in January.

Uruguayan coach Marcelo Bielsa was suspended for the match by CONMEBOL because his team returned to the field late for the second half of their first two games. The Uruguayan Football Association was fined $15,000.
